The Messy Truth

In America today, the establishment is on the ropes, the rebels are on the rise, and now the people are ready to talk. People aren’t just talking, they’re screaming at the top of their lungs. But we can’t seem to listen. In the midst of all the inflammation and toxicity of the election season, we’ve all lost the ability to step into someone else’s shoes and see each other as human beings. We don’t all have to agree, but we can learn a lot from each other. At a certain point people might surprise themselves and say something they hadn’t already thought or heard.

The Messy Truth is about hearing about people’s hopes and fears. The Messy Truth is learning how to argue again. The Messy Truth complicates everyone’s worldview. The Messy Truth is about understanding how people feel and challenging assumptions. This is not gotcha journalism. This is brutal honesty.

This six-part digital docu-series explores a community-based attempt to fight violence in Burkina Faso. Each episode profiles a community member in the small town of SAABA: a police officer, a Muslim cleric, a leader of a vigilante security group, a women's activist, and the tribal chief. The final episode follows everyone as they come together to build security and resilience in a community on the border of Boko Haram and ISIS strongholds in West Africa. The series is an honest, authentic, people-centered view of a peace-building effort in an area drawing increasing international attention for its role in combating violent extremism.

Watch to learn more about women-run and solar-powered El Centro De Apoyo Muyo kitchen which offered free meals to families after the hurricane. “When we get together, we survive, and I think this community won’t forget that lesson.”
